Switching energy suppliers

With gas and electricity prices rising rapidly, you want to ensure you are getting the best deal possible on your utility bills. For consumers willing to switch suppliers there are still a decent number of good deals being offered.

Fixed rate deals of one to four years are available at lower costs than standard prices and there are internet rates offering savings of around £300 a year.

Shopping around to see what suppliers offer could save you a significant amount of money each year. Through this site you can access some of the approved online comparison services known as “switching sites”. Simply click the compare now button above.

Before you start the process you'll need to have have copies of your last few bills and your annual statement to hand. The annual statement shows how much you will pay over the next 12 months if you stay on your present tariff making it easy to compare other deals. If you use a prepayment meter card or key try and work out roughly how much you spend every week or month.

You'll also need to check whether you'll incur a fee for cancelling your current energy deal. Exit fees are common with fixed or capped rate tariffs if you end the deal before a set period.

Simple 5 step process

1. You'll need to have the following information available:

2. Enter your details into switching form, this will calculate which options are best for you.

3. On the results page, you can compare the latest deals and find the one most suitable for you.

4. You can select the tariff and supplier you want, and follow the instructions to complete the switch.

5. After finding a better deal there is a set timescale for moving over to a new supplier. Switching can take between six and eight weeks, during which time the old supplier continues to provide energy. There will be no interruption to supply. Your new energy supplier will organise the switch. You'll need to submit meter readings to them when requested, and settle outstanding bills with your old company. The process takes around eight weeks.

If you change you mind, you have seven working days from the time you signed the contract to pull out without incurring any charges.
